Title Tag and SEO: How to Optimize It?

A complete guide to optimizing your Title tags and improving your Google rankings

We saw in a previous article titled "Title Tag, Meta Description and CTR: Their Importance for Your SEO" that the Title tag of a web page is the most important element for its organic search ranking on Google.

In this article, we will see how to optimize a Title tag to improve your ranking on Google.

First, let's quickly recall what it is. The content of the Title tag is the title of your page; it is displayed in web browser tabs and as the title in Google's SERPs.

Title tag example

Example: Title tag of the homepage of Le-Coran.com

Since its content is displayed in large characters in search engine organic results, this tag should make users want to learn more about the content of your page and therefore click on it.

Important: To prevent your page title from being truncated with an ellipsis and to ensure it displays fully in Google's SERPs, you must make sure that its content does not exceed 70 characters.

How to Build a Title Tag to Optimize a Page's SEO?

You should write your Title tag so that it contains the most important keywords of your page, ranked from most important to least important. Since it is undeniably the most important element for properly ranking your page on Google, it is recommended to maximize its potential by including as many keywords as possible while making sure you do not exceed the 70-character limit.

Warning! This does not mean you should overload this tag with keywords to produce a meaningless result. On the contrary, such a practice would decrease the click-through rate on your page title in Google's SERPs, and Google could even penalize your site for over-optimization!

Golden rule: Each page of a website must contain an optimized and UNIQUE Title tag. Indeed, multiple pages of the same website should not have the same Title tag, as this would put them in competition with each other and create duplicate content.

Practical Examples

In the example illustrated above, the keyword I most want to rank the homepage of Le-Coran.com for is "Coran en français" (Quran in French), so I wrote the page title as follows:

Example 1 - Homepage

Coran en français – Lire, écouter et télécharger – Arabe et Phonétique

For the page I want to rank for the keywords "Coran en ligne" (Quran online, as a priority), "Saint Coran" (Holy Quran) and "Coran en arabe" (Quran in Arabic), I wrote it as follows:

Example 2 - Secondary page

Coran en ligne – Lire, écouter et télécharger le Saint Coran en Arabe
